Scorsese and DeNiro set to reunite for two part gangster/biography films

It's been 15 years since Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro ended their streak of classic collaborations, and finally are set to reunite again on 'The Irishman', which is an adaptation of the non-fiction crime novel “I Heard You Paint Houses.” The script is written by Steven Zaillain (Gangs of New York), and the story is about Frank Sheeran, a mob assassin who claimed 25 professional hits, including Jimmy Hoffa. Scorsese confirmed in February by saying, “There’s no doubt about that. We’re working on something like that, but it’s from the vantage point of older men looking back, none of this running around stuff.”
DeNiro went into more detail during a recent interview at a Tribeca Film Festival press conference, claiming this would not be your average gangster film, but instead be more of an homage to Italian maestro Federico Fellini's films like 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita. I know that 8 1/2 is one of Scorsese's most treasured movies of all time and seeing him do his own take on that would downright delightful and potentially fantastic. The film would as a result be a reflection and allegory on each of these artist's careers. They've got my $14, wait make that $28 - there are going to be two films planned!
“We have a more ambitious idea, hopefully, to make it a two-part type of film or two films,” De Niro said. “It’s an idea that came about from [screenwriter] Eric Roth to combine these movies using the footage from ‘Paint Houses’ to do another kind of a [film that is] reminiscent of a kind of 8 1/2, and La Dolce Vita, [a] certain kind of biographical, semi-biographical type of Hollywood movie — a director and the actor — based on things Marty and I have experienced and kind of overlapping them.”
The first film would focus on Zaillain’s adaptation of the novel, a more straightforward wiseguy story, while the second would follow Roth’s more meta script about the nine films De Niro and Scorsese made together. It could be a while before this happens though, Scorsese is shooting The Invention of Hugo Cabret (in 3D) this June and is preparing a Frank Sinatra biopic. I've got my fingers crossed for 2012.
